This In N Out burger recipe is inspired by the legendary secret menu “Double Double Animal style” burger. It is a very fun and easy cook to try, so let’s get started!
In N Out Burger Recipe (Copy Cat In N Out Burger)
The first thing to do is make the “spread”, which is In N Out’s version of a Thousand Island dressing. Therefore if you do not want to make this yourself you can substitute it with regular Thousand Island dressing.
For the spread you will need:
- 2T + 2t Mayonnaise
- 2T Ketchup
- 2T Sweet Relish
- 1/2t Distilled Vinegar
- 1/2t Sugar
Mix all the ingredients together until you get a nice, uniform color, then put it in the fridge.
Time to prepare the onions. Mince one whole onion as fine as you can. In a skillet heat up some cooking oil, and add the minced onion. Our aim is to caramelize it to the point that it is almost a paste. When you notice that the onion starts to dry out, you can add some water to bring it back to life.
For the bun, the closest to the In N Out you will find in a store is the brand “Arnold”. To make them match the original hamburger buns a little more, you can put them in the oven at 400F for 2 minutes just to darken it up a little bit.
For the Animal style burger you will need 2 patties. Each patty should be about 3/16ths of an inch thick. Season with Kosher salt and pepper on both sides.
Pour a little oil on the griddle before putting the patties on there. The goal is to get a nice crust and color on the patty.
And now the secret that distinguishes the Animal Style patties from stock ones. As soon as the patties are on the griddle, spread mustard on the upper side. Later, when you flip the patties, put a slice of cheese (preferably deli) on the other side.
You can also put the buns on the griddle for a few minutes to give them a toast.
You are almost done! Assemble your Animal Style Double Double by putting the spread on the buns, followed by some pickles, a piece of tomato, some lettuce, a patty, some of the onions, the second patty and the other bun.
