It’s the weekend and you want to cook up some bratwurst on the barbecue. Here’s how to make the most juicy, plump, flavorful brats you’ve ever tasted.
Easy Bratwurst on the Barbecue Grill
The key to a perfect brat is cooking it in two stages.
In the first stage is basically poaching the bratwurst: you are going to cook it to about 85% doneness in beer. So, place the brats in a roasting pan or cast iron, choose any beer you like to drink, and pour it over the brats until completely covered.
It is very important that the brats are submerged all the way! Otherwise they won’t cook evenly- it’s really worth the beer.
Let them poach in the beer over medium-high heat for about 20 minutes.
In the second stage, you’re going to sear the brats. Once they’ve done poaching, simply transfer them out of the beer directly to high heat to brown the edges.
Make sure to flip them over continuously to ensure even doneness and prevent burning.
Once you’ve got a nice brown, caramelized color on the bratwurst, it’s ready! Put it on a bun with mustard and shredded lettuce, and enjoy!
