Pork Cheeseburger Recipe A.K.A “Popeye Burger” And Rightfully So

This pork cheeseburger recipe, A.K.A “Popeye Burger”, will make your mouth water with delight and take you on a journey through Italian-inspired flavors and twists to the usual burger formula. Just wait and see how it’s put together…

You will need:

  • Ground Pork Shoulder
  • Panko Breadcrumbs
  • Kosher salt
  • Garlic powder
  • Onion Powder
  • Paprika
  • 1 tsp Honey
  • 1 Whisked Egg
  • Extra Virgin Olive Oil
  • Fresh Spinach, chopped
  • 2 Bacon slices, chopped
  • Speck (or pancetta) slices
  • Granny Smith apple, diced
  • Oaxaca cheese (or other creamy, mild cheese)
  • Parmesan Reggiano
  • Burger Buns

“Popeye Burger” Pork Cheeseburger Recipe

Half of the magic in any burger is in the patty. Therefore, try to source your meat as fresh and high quality as possible. Ask your meat provider to grind some pork or take it home and grind it yourself – either way, this one’s gonna be legendary.

For the patty breading, season some Panko breadcrumbs with Kosher salt, garlic powder, onion powder and paprika. Once you have your patty ready, paint over it with some whisked egg, then cover with the seasoned breadcrumbs. Repeat on the other side as well.

Fire up the grill, and set it up for two-zone cooking (direct and indirect heat). Place a cast iron skillet directly over the flames, and heat up some olive oil. Next, throw in the chopped up bacon, and fry until it becomes nice and crispy.

Once done, add the diced apple – its sweetness will balance out the saltiness of the bacon and cheese, and the bitterness of the spinach. Let the apple change color a little, then add in the spinach. Cook that for a few minutes as well, and finally add the honey and creamy cheese.

Once the sauce reaches the desired consistency, move the skillet over to the indirect heat side to keep it warm, while moving on to the next part of this pork cheeseburger recipe: The patty. You can cook this one of two ways: either pan frying it in a cast iron skillet, or filling the skillet up with vegetable oil and deep frying it. If you go with deep frying, make sure to drain excess oil off the patty once it’s ready.

Give the buns a quick toast, and assemble your burger! Place a few slices of Speck on the bottom bun, followed by Parmesan cheese, the breaded pork patty, and finally top with the cheesy bacon & spinach sauce.
