How To Use a Solar Grill To Cook a Cheeseburger!

You might have seen these solar grills in Season 13 of Top Chef. You just need a skillet, your ingredients, a sunny day outside, and you’re ready to go!

To get started, adjust the mirrors on the grill so the sun is concentrated on the smaller black mirror in the center. Secure everything in place and position your skillet atop the cooking surface. It won’t take long for the skillet to become hot enough to cook!

Keep in mind you can adjust the temperature by moving the focus point of the black mirror to a different spot underneath your skillet.

For this demonstration we’re cooking a Cheeseburger del Sol. For this you will need:

  • Beef patty
  • 3 Strips Bacon (chopped up)
  • 1 slice of Fuji apple
  • Cheddar cheese
  • 1 White onion (chopped up)
  • 1 Cup Bourbon whiskey
  • ¼ Cup Brown sugar
  • ¼ tsp Cayenne pepper
  • Kosher salt
  • Fresh black pepper
  • arugula leaves

Start by adding the chopped bacon to the hot skillet. Once the fat starts rendering down, add the onion to give it some nice color. Add in the Brourbon, brown sugar, cayenne pepper, kosher salt and black pepper. Bring the mix up to a boil, then reduce it to the thickness of a syrup-y sauce.

Time to grill the patty! Season the ground meat with salt & pepper and throw it on the heat. Alongside it place a slice of Fuji apple, seasoned with salt and sugar, and give it a browning. After flipping the patty, place a slice of cheddar cheese on it. Once it starts melting away, place the apple slice on top of the patty/cheese.

Give the buns a toast, then assemble the burger with some fresh arugula, the patty, and the onion/bacon sauce.
